Learning Lounge Sessions

Get credit for attending these 20–30 minute informal presentations. The presentations will focus on research and best practices about how the board can positively affect student achievement from their leadership role. They will provide learning data and positive examples about how school districts are dealing with loss of learning caused by the pandemic.

The Learning Lounge is located in the exhibit hall near the entrance to the general sessions.

Setting High Expectations and Providing the Tools to Meet Them

Join us for a session with representatives from Lockhart ISD as they share the importance of setting high expectations. They will talk about how their 1.5 initiative backed with positive leadership and resources has greatly benefited the students of their district.

Building a Culture of Excellence Starts in the Board Room

In Kerrville ISD their “visions, values, beliefs and goals are centered around excellence.” To institute excellence as a norm throughout the district, the board and superintendent team have embraced learning together as a team to model what they want to see from the students and staff. Come learn about their journey.

Monitoring a Community’s Dream by Keeping Score

In 2017 the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees invited the community to come together to discuss and dream about what Boerne ISD could become.  Over 250 stakeholders met for over 9 months to create a strategic plan to make sure those dreams come true, but then what? The question became, “How do we know we are staying focused on the community’s dream for BISD”?  To maintain focus on the strategic plan, the Trustees in partnership with district leadership created a district scorecard to help monitor and guide district decision making.

eXceptional by Choice Author Jim Collins found that some organizations are “great by choice.

What would it mean for a school board to be great, or eXceptional, by choice? The Allen ISD board, in partnership with their superintendent and senior staff, are focusing and aligning their governance commitments, priorities, and processes to improve success for every one of their students. Hear from trustees and administrators as they share suggestions and tips from their journeys.

Social Contracts: Building Our Own Roadmap to Success

Successful district leadership and governance is built through trust and cooperation. Setting up a Social Contract establishes ground rules and clear expectations and responsibilities of ourselves as individual board members and as a team giving us the foundation by which the board can hold itself accountable while supporting the organization and its decisions to move the district forward.
